United Nations World Remembrance Day Event: Chandigarh, India
ArriveSAFE, the British Council, the British Library in Chandigarh, India and CITCO have collaborated to mark the United Nations World Day of Remembrance on 15th November 2009.
“Road Safety: Our message to World Leaders”; is a competition open from the 24th of October 2009 to the 7th of November 2009 targeted at students across the schools and colleges in the Tri-city and adjoining areas. Participants will develop illustrations with captions that advocate the message of road safety.
These illustrations will go into a competition with the winning submissions judged by London based writer, artist and designer, Woodrow Phoenix and President of ArriveSAFE, Harman S. Sidhu.
On Sunday the 15th of November the first, second and third placed winning entries will be announced at an “Award Giving Function”. Winning entries from each judging group will be presented with a “Road Safety Award” on behalf of ArriveSAFE, the British Council and the British Library and their illustrations will be exhibited at the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held November 19th-20th November 2009 to be held in Moscow, Russia.
This event seeks to involve the broader public in United Nations World Day of Remembrance with a procession of volunteers from ArriveSAFE and international student organization AIESEC to walk around the lake with 15 wheelchairs. The 15 wheelchairs represent the 15 life altering injuries that occur for every one road related fatality that occurs on the road. The procession would held during the busiest times at the lake to ensure a maximum amount of people are involved with the event. A crushed car would also be displayed to show the impact of speed. Through this action the serious nature of the life changing impact of road traffic accidents will be communicated.
The “Road Safety - Our message to World Leaders” competition seeks to educate and empower youth to take action to increase awareness of road safety related incidents and also involve the parents of the participants and advocate the message of road safety and the importance of changing road habits to a heavily impacted group of the road using community.
The entirety of this event seeks to develop stronger awareness within the community about road safety and the aftermath of events that change the lives of so many road users around the world everyday.
