| Oprah fights distracted driving |
Oprah Winfrey is wading into the fight against distracted driving.
Oprah and her Harpo Studios are launching a new campaign with transportation safety organizations for "No Phone Zone Day," which will be held Friday, April 30. A press release said the event is intended "to honor victims of distracted driving" and "to educate ... Americans to end the deadly driving habits that kill nearly 6,000 [people] a year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)." The announcement came Tuesday on Oprah's show.

| Maruti Suzuki launches National Road Safety Mission |
Maruti Suzuki is celebrating 25 years of being number one automobile manufacturer in India, the first Maruti 800 was rolled out in December 1983. To highlight its concerns about road safety, the company launched a corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaign, called National Road Safety Mission.
Under the campaign, Maruti will provide driving lessons to five lakh people in the next three years. Of these, around one lakh people will be from the underprivileged sections of society, who are keen to take up driving as a profession, and they will be taught free of cost.

| RTO reaches out to schoolkids, parents |
The regional transport office (RTO) has taken an initiative to introduce school buses and ensure that private transportation is discouraged in schools. The parents and students present at a seminar on road safety, organised by The Times of India in association with Modern School, were briefed by regional transport officer, Arvind Pandey on the efforts made by RTO to make school transportation safe.
Parents should be alert and keep safety as a priority, said Pandey. "We have issued letters to the school to identify and thoroughly check private buses and alternative travel modes", he said.

| Traffic training in schools soon |
Traffic problems, rules and management are finally becoming part of the state's school curriculum. The city police have already talked to
the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) in this regard, and the latter has agreed to teach it to middle-school students.
"We are yet to decide the academic year we would target, but it has been decided that it would be studied in classes VI, VII and VIII in all secondary schools of the state," said police commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti while inaugurating the Traffic Training School at Tala on Saturday.

| Road safety for young minds |
To inculcate the importance of road safety and traffic signages, the Transport Department has begun a new initiative/project to distribute information booklets to school and college students of the Government as well as private educational institutions in the State.
Under the initiative, Garden City College students and students of Mother Theresa School were distributed booklets at programmes on ‘Adolescents and Road Safety’ on a pilot basis.

It’s funny how there seems to be a catch-22 on the roads these days. Every time I drive for an extended period of time, it starts to feel like anyone who drives faster is a maniac but, at the same time, anyone who drives slower is a moron.
Obviously, I don’t expect everyone on the motorways to drive at the same speed; it just wouldn’t work. But speed isn’t the only issue here.
