| Residents out to check overloading of vehicles |
Following the failure of the authorities concerned to check the plying of condemned passenger vehicles, people themselves have started a campaign to check the violation of traffic rules.
"We have lost faith in government agencies," said Ravinder Slathia, who along with other youths was intercepting overloaded passenger vehicles plying on the road near Udhampur. He opined that it was due to the lack of will among politicians that road accidents were taking place frequently in the hilly areas of the Jammu region.

| Traffic police request NHAI to improve accident-prone roads |
Apart from identifying 27 accident-prone areas, the traffic police authorities on Friday took four accident-prone stretches connecting Allahabad with neighbouring districts under its scanner.
These stretches are Phaphamau-to-Malaq Har Har ( Allahabad-Lucknow Road), Jhunsi-to-Ramnathpur railway crossing ( Allahabad-Varanasi route), Naini-Zaribazar ( Allahabad-Mirzapur route) and Dhoomanganj-Puramufti ( Allahabad-Kaushambi-Kanpur) route. |

| Accident death toddler is named |
The name of the three-year-old girl who died in a road accident in Coleraine on Tuesday evening has been released.
She was Roma McAleese, from the Ashdale area of the town.
She was struck by a vehicle while playing in Ashdale Park at about 1845 BST. She was taken to hospital, but died a short time later.

Punjab Congress MLA from Bholath Sukhpal Singh Khaira Thursday asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to take immediate steps to regulate traffic in Punjab to save the precious lives like that of cooperation minister Cap Kanwaljit Singh in a road accident.
In a letter written to CM, Khaira said, "In the death of Capt. Kanwaljit Singh we have lost a sober politician with a vision and immense experience as a parliamentarian. His death is an eye opener to the chaotic conditions prevailing on the roads in India in general and Punjab in particular". |

| No helmet for women: Relief or fatal risk? |
It's an exemption that they can do without. Women riders on two-wheelers don't need to wear helmets in the capital. This irrational concession is proving to be fatal and doctors are now questioning it.
Dr MC Misra, director of Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS, is disturbed over the fatalities among women because of this and questions this waiver of what's essentially a safety requirement. "One in four women injured in accidents die due to head injuries. The victims are found not to be wearing helmets. In the past one year, an alarming 300 plus such cases have been dealt with in this hospital."

The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) has called on the public to take safety measures especially when driving during this Easter holiday.
Speaking at a media briefing this week, Jerry Muadinohamba, the fund's CEO, called on the public to drink responsibly.

| Police trained in online recording of accident cases |
In a bid to prevent the rise in number of road accident cases every day, the State government has taken a series of measures, according to senior police officials.
As a first step, a team comprising police, highways and transport department officials has been formed. BANGALORE: The newly-built subways on Nrupatunga Road, laid by the city corporation, are proving to be useful to the citizens of Bangalore. The second of the three pedestrian subways to be constructed on Nrupathunga road opposite St. Martha's hospital was laid on Sunday.
Work on the third is to begin shortly.Last year, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had said that it would transform the look of the city in the next five months by constructing about 100 subways, also known as 'magic boxes,' in the city. |

BANGALORE: The number of fatal and non-fatal cases in the city had reduced by 17% and 15% respectively in 2008 as compared to 2007.
Mohammad Sajjad Khan, traffic police inspector at Shivaji Nagar informed that in 2008 around 7159 fatal and non-fatal cases had been registered.
"Recent survey by the Bangalore Traffic states 793 fatal cases and 6366 non-fatal cases have been registered," said Khan. |

| Drunken drivers on rise in the city |
The City Traffic Police statistics this year shows a seven per cent increase in the number of drunken drivers as compared to 2007.
This year 29,608 cases have been registered till December 13. In this month alone the Bangalore Traffic West and Traffic East recorded about 957 cases reported against drunken drivers. 27,644 such cases were registered last year.

The city traffic police recorded a marginal reduction of pedestrian deaths in 2008 as compared to 2007.
Sajad Khan, Traffic Inspector East said that recent statistics shows that pedestrian death rates have reduced.
"This year there has been a reduction of 63 pedestrian's deaths and 51 injured in context to the year 2007," he said.
