Becoming road-worthy
MY NRI friend was returning from London, with a British colleague in tow. To make some polite talk, I asked the first-time visitor how his drive from Delhi to Chandigarh had been. “Wonderful,” he replied, “you see, I have been an atheist all my life, but during this journey I prayed all the way through and now qualify to be a believer”.

A stretch meant only for the ‘patient’
At first, it may sound like an oft-heard, overdone script of an infrastructure-based tearjerker. Agreed, the tale of Hosur Road, from Lalbagh Siddapura gate to the Diary Circle flyover, brings out woes similar to those faced by the rest of the roads in crumbling Bangalore — choked choc-a-bloc, manic traffic movement, pitiful potholes, fallen footpath and dismal road discipline. But what sets this road apart is an extra dash of melodrama.

Driving you crazy?
Roads are getting wider, and swanky new cars have replaced the good ol' white Ambassador. A silent prayer to bless the flyover techies and builders, but there goes a simultaneous curse to the Kolkata driver. The same guy who rushes past the other cars rashly, whether from the left or the right, or if it's an ambulance in distress or a sweaty rickshawpuller, is immaterial. The driving scene is bad. SK Mitra, deputy commissioner, traffic (II), explained, "It's true that 75 per cent of the accidents occur due to faulty driving, while the rest 25 per cent can be attributed to the commuters and pedestrians."
