| SE Asian nations urged to improve road safety |
Experts have urged Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries to promote road safety and strictly enforce traffic laws to cut high death tolls from accidents, which result in heavy economic losses. Barry Cable, director of the transport and tourism division, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Escap), said Southeast Asian governments must do more in the areas of children's education and public awareness to increase safety. He made the statement during a week-long meeting on the development of the Asian Highway Network, which began on Wednesday.

The citation reads: "... he rushed the accident victims to the nearby reputed hospital situated at JJ Nagar, Mogappair." Unfortunately, the duty doctor "advised" PK Sagar, who went out of his way to help three accident victims last year, to take the injured to another hospital.
The experience of Mr. Sagar, who received the `Ravindran Memorial Good Samaritan Award' from the Automobile Association of Southern India (AASI) on Thursday, prompted former judge of the Supreme Court S. Mohan to urge all hospitals not to turn away accident victims.

| Driving schools give rules the go-by |
Mug up the signals in the backseat, put your hand out after 20 sessions and you have the licence to drive.
This is the routine followed by most city driving schools that do not even bother to keep a track of their students, say officials and traffic managers.
Last month, the Transport department pulled up four of the 129 driving schools in Chennai city area for not maintaining logbooks.
"They did not even have details about when the applicant had joined the school," says a senior official.
A decision on suspension of their permits would be taken after a detailed enquiry, he said.
However, the problems are not confined to logbooks.

Texans love their vehicles but more and more residents of the Lone Star State are parking their cars and lacing up their walking shoes, said experts from Texas Cooperative Extension.

Mahavir Singh, deputy commissioner, Delhi Traffic Police, has been successful in getting corporate support for a routine exercise, which is conducted by his department.
Bausch & Lomb recently organised an eye-screening camp for commercial vehicle drivers in association with the Delhi Traffic Police. A large number of commercial vehicle drivers underwent tests for vision fit for driving. The drivers, comprising blueline, lorry and truck drivers, underwent a thorough test which involved testing for eye conditions such as perfect vision, colour blindness and other disorders. The Delhi traffic police personnel also underwent tests for good vision during the programme.

As such cities grow more congested with cars, changes are often made at the expense of pedestrians, even though walking is the most common means of transportation in developing countries, Krambeck said. She cited the example of New Delhi, India, which recently created a number of new roads without creating new space for walkers.
A dual master's degree candidate in city planning and in science and transportation, Krambeck studied walkability as part of a two-year internship with the World Bank. The work eventually became her master's thesis, which she completed in February.
