WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Dear World Youth Ambassadors for Road Safety

Why are you receiving this e-mail?

You receive this e-mail because you were strongly involved in the World Youth Assembly for Road Safety (WYA) in April 2007. We would like to update you on the follow-up, check if you are still involved in road safety, and find out if you are interested in supporting the creation of a global youth NGO for road safety.

Follow up to WYA: Global Youth NGO

As you recall, during the WYA we agreed to ensure follow up to the Assembly nationally and globally. It is very pleasing to see that there have been a good number of national initiatives around the world and this year we actually have the resources to start the global follow up.

Since April 2007 Nellie Ghusayni (chair WYA), Steven Lauwers (WHO) and me (vice-chair WYA) -with the support of WHO- have been following up and have explored various possibilities. Below is some information on our recent successes and the support we have secured:
  • Key partners in the field of road safety have shown a lot of interest in and support for the creation of the NGO (WHO, European Commission, International Federation of the Red Cross, Global Road Safety Partnership, etc.);
  • We have secured financial support to cover the expenses of the first two working years from Michelin.
  • Temporarily I have become a staff member of WHO until we are in a position to formally launch the NGO. My primary task is to coordinate the conceptualization of the global youth NGO for road safety.
First step: Youth Network for Road Safety

We would like to invite you to join the global youth network for road safety, which will be the base of the global youth NGO for road safety. This is only the first step; in the future we believe that the global youth network can benefit you in many ways:
  • Knowledge sharing: share youth activities for road safety; exchange of good practices; share press releases, newsletters, etc.
  • Support from the global youth NGO for road safety: technical assistance, small grants for youth projects, preparation of advocacy material to bring attention to our struggle on a global level, etc.
  • Networking: with access to this and other youth networks you can meet new active youth and plan events that exceed your borders;
Please react, we need your support!

To get a scope of who is still involved in road safety and interested in supporting the creation of the global youth NGO for road safety, please tell us if:
  1. You want to stay informed of our activities and would like to actively participate in the creation of the NGO
  2. You would like to stay informed but don't want to get involved actively;
  3. Someone is not on this mailing list that you know who would be very interested in getting involved. Please give us the contact details of this person so we can add him/her to the youth network.
If we do not receive a reply, we will assume that you are not working on road safety issues and / or not interested anymore.

This is our chance to bring youth together globally and talk to the rest of the world with one voice. Road safety is a global problem, not something that stops at our borders. I really look forward to hearing from you. Feel free to contact me at any time for more information or for sharing ideas.

Thank you,
With my best regards,

Floor Lieshout
