Helmet Awareness and Distribution Campaign – International Women’s Day

The campaign was held to highlight the amount of space used by a single motorist on the road. “MyCar” is a structure of the size of a car with just one person inside it. It visually highlights the irrationality caused by car dominance and its excessive land consumption.

The appeal to public is to get de-addicted from being an “Autoholic” to a “Cured” person and opt for alternate modes of transport, earlier the better. The steps taken by the Administration to accommodate the vehicles, in the form of road widening and increased parking space gets negated due to the fast influx of more and more cars.

Traffic engineers, in Europe, over the period have realized that widening roads does not reduce congestion but in fact induce more congestion. In Chandigarh the average trip length is short and majority of these trips can be easily facilitated using walking, cycling and public transport thus reducing the congestion.

The United Nations Road Safety Collaboration in its, “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020” and the “National Urban Transport Policy” by Ministry of Urban Development, India calls for:

  • Bringing about a more equitable allocation of road space with people, rather than vehicles, as its main focus.
  • Priority to the use of public transport and non-motorized transport

The appeal to the residents – Avoid travelling by cars to boost City Beautiful’s Economy and Livability.
